QR: History in the making at Queensland Raceway

22/9/2003 23:48 (Press Release) - It will be the biggest-ever gathering of V8 Supercars in Queensland motorsport history after it was confirmed today that Queensland Raceway will host a combined round of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series and its feeder competition, the Konica V8 Series on July 2-4 next year.

More than 70 V8 Supercars will roar around the Ipswich circuit over three days of competition, representing the biggest ever undertaking at Queensland Raceway.

“Motor racing fans voted with their feet during this year’s BigPond 300 and the record attendances over all three days of racing has ensured an even brighter future for Queensland Raceway,” said Raceway Chairman, John Tetley.

“This is the first time that the Konica V8 Series has been staged in Queensland and I’m sure the V8 double-header will guarantee bumper crowds next year.

“Through what we’ve been able to achieve over the last five years we have cemented ourselves as an integral part of this international series and we look forward to working with AVESCO to ensure next year’s event will again be something really special.”

“The new, strong, productive relationship that has been developed with AVESCO bodes well for the fans of this most exciting class of international motorsport.

“Today’s announcement has ensured the fun and excitement of V8 Supercar racing will be enjoyed by Queenslanders and I’m sure the Ipswich community will embrace what will be one of the major sporting highlights in 2004.

“What is also pleasing is the announcement has been made so early and supporters of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship Series can put the July 2-4 date into their diaries and prepare for what will be one of the biggest events on the National calendar.

“The double header profile of next year’s feature will guarantee spectators even better value for money and with a range of new and attractive initiatives planned, I’d be surprised if we can’t go close to attracting a capacity crowd.”

There’s no doubting the growth of Queensland Raceway has been a direct result of Queenslanders warming to top class motorsport action and today’s announcement will guarantee the trend continues well into the future.

“Everyone who attended the BigPond 300 would have been pleased with the entertainment the Raceway was able to offer and with Queenslanders once again featuring on the podium, support for local drivers is sure to grow along with the profile of V8 Supercars,” added Tetley.
