MUNDY: Mundy sacrifices Bathurst 1000 for 2004
22/9/2003 23:37 (Press Release) -
Actron Air Racing’s, Kevin Mundy will surrender a start at this years Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 on October 12 to concentrate on his 2004 Konica V8 Supercar Championship campaign.
Despite not starting the 1000 kilometre event, Mundy will still take to the grid for the Konica V8 Supercar Challenge on October 11.
“We seriously considered doing the main race, but in the end decided the resources would be better put into our 2004 Konica V8 Supercar Championship,” Mundy said.
“It is a shame, because last year in my first Bob-Jane T-Marts 1000, we finished the event. It would have been interesting to see how much we could have improved now that we have a different car and crew.”
Mundy regrets not making the decision earlier, and believes a prior announcement may have potentially lead him to a co-drive in the main event.
“We really explored our options fully to ensure that there was a chance to start the 1000km race in the Actron Air Falcon. But in the end I was not willing to sacrifice one event for an entire championship,” Mundy commented.
“The late announcement has meant that I also counted myself out of a co-drive. If you look at the field, a lot of the co-drivers have come from the Konica series, but I guess that is the way things go.”
Mundy finished 10th in the 2003 Konica V8 Supercar Championship after misfortune plagued the end of his season.
“Things were going really well at the start of the season but things went pear shaped at Phillip Island. If missing Bathurst means I can put more into next year’s Konica Championship than so be it,” Mundy added.
Mundy will hit the challenging Mount Panorama circuit for practice on Thursday 9 October 2003. Qualifying for the Konica V8 Supercar Challenge will be on Friday 10 October 2003
“I can’t wait to race at Mount Panorama. It is my favourite circuit and I am just glad that I can still have a race in one of the support races,” Mundy concluded.
