HYL: Young Lions ready to take a bite at the big boys
10/9/2003 11:18 (Press Release) -
2003 Holden Young Lions endurance drivers, Dale Brede and Tony Ricciardello are licking their lips in anticipation of this weekend’s Betta Electrical Sandown 500.
Whilst realistic about their chances, the boys are eager to see how they measure up against the regular championship teams and hope to claim a few scalps. The #46 machine that they will pilot in the event travelled directly from the last Konica round at Mallala to be prepared by the team in Melbourne and will be the sole Konica car in the Sandown event.
Brede who ran both endurance events last year knows that anything can happen in the big races.
“It’s a big ask to show up and expect to knock off a few of the big boys but you never know what can happen in these endurance races. I really think that we will just have to keep out of trouble and see how the race unfolds.”
“I’m not pretending that I think we will have the pace of HRT or Stones but in reality a bit of bad weather or backmarker incident can be a great equaliser.”
Tony Ricciardello endorses Dale's views and has an extra challenge having never driven the car before.
“Having never sat in the car before it looks like being an interesting time for me but after sitting down with Dale and the boys I am confident we may ruffle a few feathers in the race. I know in preparation John and the team found a few little things to tweak the car and we will just see where we slot in.
“It is important not only in terms of the race but also preparation for Bathurst so getting laps will be the priority," Ricciardello said.
