CAMS: CAMS confirms safety at Phillip Island

5/9/2003 16:21 (Press Release) - Australia's controlling motor sport body, the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport, has reacted to speculation regarding the ongoing use of the Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit for all forms of car racing.

"Phillip Island is an important part of the fabric of Australian motorsport - from a driver's point of view it is regarded in the same light as the Mount Panorama circuit at Bathurst", CAMS President, Colin Osborne, said today.

Osborne continued, "Quite apart from its excellence as a motor racing track, Phillip Island Grand Prix circuit provides many opportunities for advanced driver education and the management of the circuit has been extremely professional and has in many instances set the standard."

The peak safety body within CAMS, the National Track Safety Committee, confirmed that all identified safety requirements had been met by the track management.

"Phillip Island has been subject to close safety scrutiny over a long period, and each item identified during our safety inspections has been completed to our satisfaction", said CAMS National Track Safety Committee Chairman, Brian Shead.

"Not only has the circuit completed all of CAMS' requirements, it has been highly proactive in suggesting and completing improvements in many areas, some which have required moving many thousands of cubic meters of earth."

CAMS conducts a major inspection of circuits each three years and follows these with yearly audits of the circuit's works construction program. Routine reports are also submitted at each event held at a race track. Major inspections are carried out with driver representatives present.

CAMS National Track Safety Committee includes drivers such as racing icon and Bathurst winner Colin Bond, and welcomes input from all areas of the motor racing industry.

"Phillip Island is one of the great tracks, one which is used regularly for all forms of motorsport and driver training and the importance of safety to spectators, officials and drivers cannot be stated too highly," Shead added.

Phillip Island will host a round of the Victorian State Motor Racing
Championships this weekend.
