MUNDY: Mundy's weekend ends in smoke
31/8/2003 21:32 (Press Release) -
Despite the continuation of his voodoo at Mallala, Actron Air Racing driver, Kevin Mundy has finished tenth in the 2003 Konica V8 Supercar Championship today.
Mundy’s hopes of a top ten round position went up in smoke due to engine trouble that meant the Actron Air Falcon was unable to start the final race of the 2003 Konica V8 Supercar Championship.
“The engine problem sustained in race two could not be fixed in time for the third race. The Actron Air Falcon felt good and was achieving some good lap times during the first two races today, it was just a shame I could not take full advantage of these gains,” Mundy said.
“If we had of finished the race it would have bumped us up a few positions in the championship order as some of the people close to me also recorded a 'DNF'.”
Mundy started and finished the first race in 12th position. During the reverse grid in race two, Mundy was placed as high as fifth until clashing with another car. Ten laps later Mundy retired with an engine problem.
“Mallala just isn’t my track. To catch fire here last year and then be forced to retire today, I must be haunted by a few black cats. I struggled during practice this weekend but the car started to come good during qualifying and race one,” Mundy commented
Team manager Paul Cruickshank felt Mundy’s disappointment on his conclusion to the championship.
“When Kevin came into the pits in race two we thought there was a small chance of fixing the problem, however when we looked at it we realized it was impossible,” Cruickshank said.
Mundy joined Paul Cruickshank Racing at the start of 2003, a move which has helped him develop his driving skills over the year.
“The move to PCR was definitely the right thing to do. The boys have done a fantastic job preparing the car and their expertise has taught me a lot about motor racing,” Mundy added.
“While we loosely aimed for a top ten finish in the championship, our main priority was to work at improvement and development, something which I think we have definitely achieved.”
