MUNDY: Mundy looking forward to final
30/8/2003 23:06 (Press Release) -
V8 Supercar driver Kevin Mundy remains optimistic for a top ten finish at round six of the 2003 Konica V8 Supercar Series despite qualifying his Actron Air Falcon in 12th position at Mallala this afternoon.
Mundy was unable to maximise on the 35-minute combined qualifying session due to a brake problem which only allowed him to complete two flying laps.
“My first flying lap saw me in tenth position, which was very promising. This lap was completed with a severely flat-spotted tyre,” Mundy said.
“I then got knocked down two positions in the order to 12th. This isn’t too bad considering the track time we had today.”
Mundy believes the Actron Air Falcon may surprise a few people during tomorrow’s three races.
“It was a really close qualifying session and I think a few extra laps in the car would have meant the Actron Air Falcon would be further up the starting order,” Mundy commented.
“The last race at Winton saw us make up over ten positions. I think if we are lucky to stay out of the carnage that is associated with being in the mid-field we may still be able to make it to our goal of a top ten finish.”
Team manager Paul Cruickshank echoes Mundy’s disappointment and optimism.
“We were hoping to go forward again today, but sometimes that is the way things go,” Cruickshank said.
“The team has identified a few problems which they will be working to fix tonight and hopefully Kevin can draw on the passing skills he has learnt over the last few rounds to finish in a better position tomorrow."
The quiet country circuit of Mallala in South Australia marks the end of the 2003 Konica V8 Supercar Championship. It is also a round which Mundy declares critical to his final position in the series.
“I wanted to start inside the top ten to make gaining positions easier. I will just have to work a little harder tomorrow,” Mundy added.
