SBR: Winterbottom relaxed, but ready for action

27/8/2003 0:39 (Press Release) - Stone Brothers Racing's Mark Winterbottom will be heading to Mallala in South Australia this weekend for the sixth and final round of the Konica V8 Championship Series without a worry in the world - but that does not mean he won't be trying!

Winterbottom wrapped up the Konica Series in his Milligans Food Group AU Falcon at Winton in North-East Victoria earlier this month.

His efforts have seen him rewarded with a seat in the second SBR Falcon with Mark Noske for the Betta Electrical Sandown 500 (September 12-14) and the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst (October 9-12).

"It is nice to head into this weekend knowing we already have the championship in the bag," said Winterbottom.

"That doesn't mean that we won't be trying as hard as we possibly can to win the round and finish the season on a high for Milligans, Bosch, Caltex and all our other sponsors.

"This weekend will be a great chance to keep my eye in before Sandown and Bathurst."

In the meantime, the trip to Mallala will be a break from Winterbottom's rigorous training schedule at the Sanctuary Cove Rec Club on the Gold Coast.

"The training has been pretty tough, but really enjoyable," said Winterbottom.

"I have managed to put on a bit of muscle and my fitness levels are improving all the time and that will certainly help at a place like Bathurst."

Winterbottom first competed at Mallala in a Formula Ford two years ago and finished 10th in the national championship round.

He returned to the circuit last year and won the round on the way to his second place outright in the championship.

"It is always nice to return to a circuit where you won last time out," said Winterbottom.

"Mallala will certainly be different in a V8 Supercar than a Formula Ford and I am looking forward to it.

"The South Australian fans are great and will certainly be looking forward to a bit of V8 action after the success of the Clipsal 500 down there in March."

Winterbottom had little time to celebrate his recent championship win after having four wisdom teeth removed two days after the event.
