Cochrane remains at helm following re-election
19/2/2000 14:55 (Jason Whittaker) - V8 Supercar supremo, Tony Cochrane will continue to lead the booming Aussie motorsport category into the new century, after he was re-elected as Chairman of the AVESCO board, yesterday.
Cochrane, who has been instrumental in the development of the category over the past decade, will continue in the top job for the next three years.
AVESCO Chief Executive Officer, Wayne Cattach applauded the board's decision to re-elect Cochrane unopposed as Chairman, highlighting Cochrane's vital role in the further development of the category.
"The Board were unanimous in their decision to re-elect Tony as Chairman based on the results he has achieved in creating and developing the profile of the V8 Supercar series over the last three years," Cattach said.
"Under Tony's leadership the V8 Supercars have become the fastest growing Touring Car Championship in the world today."
Tony Cochrane is equally enthusiastic over the prospect of leading the V8 Supercar category into an exciting new era.
"I'd like to thank the Board for its support and look forward to the exciting challenges which lie ahead, as we work towards extending the V8 Supercar category into the Oceanic/Asia region," Cochrane said, yesterday.
"Over the last three seasons we have seen outstanding results in the growth of our crowds, sponsorship and television numbers. Season 2000 will see the V8 Supercars competing in what promises to be the most exciting year of the Shell Championship Series," he said.
Under the leadership of Cochrane, the V8 Supercar Series has grown dramatically over the past five years to the point where many believe it to be the greatest Touring Car series anywhere in the world today.
With the V8 freight-train journeying to all corners of the nation this year, competing in exciting new events such as the Adelaide 500 and the new-for-this-year National Capital 100 in Canberra, the category has never looked healthier.
"This season promises great excitement and spectacular racing which will help to increase the popularity of Australian motor racing locally and internationally," Mr Cochrane said.
Cochrane is also a Director of the giant Australasian marketing group Sports and Entertainment Limited (SEL), of which AVESCO is a part of.
