News:

You're the voice, Neil, try and understand it

5/2/2003 15:33 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Torn between an unfinished and unfulfilled racing career, and his renowned work as a television commentator, Neil Crompton’s new path is sure to please armchair V8 Supercar fans – at least for now.

Crompton will call the shots from the Ten Network’s commentary booth this year, sitting out the V8 Supercar season to work fulltime for TV’s ‘home of motorsport’.

The 42-year-old quit 00 Motorsport last season, and has rejected offers to drive in the endurance events later this year.

He told Auto Action magazine he hasn’t retired from racing and may return to the V8 circuit in the future.

His expanded role at Ten will include coverage of the Formula One series, with the network close to securing the Australian rights from Channel Nine.

Crompton will add the credibility once lacking in Ten’s V8 Supercar team, sharing the commentary box with host and caller Matthew White.

Greg Rust and rookie V8 Supercar racer (and former 500cc World Motorcycle ace) Daryl Beattie will report from pitlane.

Motoring journalist Mark Oastler, a stalwart of V8 Supercar coverage since the Channel Seven days a decade ago, has cut his involvement with Ten and will contribute on an occasional basis only.

Bill Woods will continue to anchor the showcase events, beginning with the season-opening Clipsal 500 in March.
