Skaife crowned, Bond honoured, at gala awards

2/12/2002 23:43 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - V8 Supercar racing’s star performers of 2002 were honoured at the annual awards ceremony in Melbourne tonight.

Mark Skaife was officially crowned the 2002 champion at the Crown Casino gala, his fifth national title, recognised along with the top five placegetters in this year’s series.

He also captured the title for most pole positions, five, sharing the award with Ford’s Marcos Ambrose.

The Holden Racing Team’s record-breaking year of success was honoured with the team award, while Holden predictably took home the manufacturers trophy.

One of the night’s big winners was 19-year-old Young Lion Rick Kelly, who was judged the year’s best rookie. Kelly beat qualifying sensation Max Wilson for the prestigious Mike Kable memorial award, won last year by Marcos Ambrose.

Neil Crompton received consolation for a miserable season, winning the hard-charger prize.

And Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 carnival won the race promoters title for the fourth straight year.

1975 touring car champion Colin Bond was inducted to the ‘grid of champions’, joining the likes of Peter Brock, Dick Johnson and Allan Moffat in V8 Supercar racing's hall of fame.
