Mycar to support Young Lion Kelly in 2000

18/2/2000 23:03 (Jason Whittaker) - The Holden Racing Team last week announced that Sydney-based automotive retailer Mycar, will continue to sponsor the team's Holden Young Lion entry throughout the 2000 season.

The new company, a division of Coles/Myer, joined the team for last year's Queensland 500 and FAI 1000, and will now continue to support the Young Lion operation throughout this season.

21-year-old former Formula Holden driver, Todd Kelly, will campaign the team's VT Commodore this year.

"Mycar is extremely pleased with the brand awareness created by our involvement with the Young Lions," Mycar general manager Dean Trewin said. "The performance of Todd Kelly and Mark Noske, at Bathurst in particular, was a credit to both the drivers and the Holden Racing Team."

"We believe Todd Kelly has a great future in the sport and Mycar looks forward to supporting his efforts with our expanded participation throughout the season."

Kelly and Noske performed admirably in the season-ending endurance events last year, finishing sixth at Bathurst and running as high as fourth at the Queensland 500.

Already Kelly has made his impression on the V8 circuit, placing well in both races at Phillip Island to sit in 9th place on the championship table.

"The V8 Supercar category is on a roll at the moment and I want to be part of it," Kelly commented. HRT has supported me since I was 17 and now with the support of Mycar, we have a budget that will help the HYL car contest most of the season."

"To be successful, you need the experience - especially up against the talent out there today. To be racing on a regular basis will give me the experience; now it's up to me to perform on the track."

HRT supremo Jeff Grech welcomed the sponsorship announcement, and spoke of the important role the Holden Young Lion Team plays within the Factory Holden operation.

"The V8 Supercar schedule is pretty hectic and sometimes it's difficult to find the time to carry out any testing between racing and servicing the cars," Grech explained.

"I see Todd and the Young Lions' crew, headed by Rob Crawford, being able to assist in the development of the cars for the whole team and it's also a good opportunity to develop our on-going young driver program."

The Young Lions' VT, with Kelly at the wheel, will be seen at the majority of V8 meetings across the country, including the "showcase" events in Adelaide, Canberra and Bathurst.
