The race that stops a nation: record ratings for Bathurst

17/10/2002 14:33 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - V8 Supercars' thundering roar reverberated around the nation last weekend, with more than two million Australians tuning in to the Bob Jane T-Marts 1000 at Bathurst.

The ten-hour marathon attracted 1.5 million viewers on average according to ratings provider OzTam, with a peek audience of more than 2.3 million.

Channel Ten’s 5pm news bulletin drew an unprecedented 2.4 million viewers – Sunday’s most-watched program and the highest-rating news broadcast of the year – on the back of the telecast.

The race was also broadcast live around the world, including in New Zealand where the dramatic conclusion was seen in prime time.

"This is one of the largest broadcasts in Australia and it is always satisfying to see such a large audience appreciate all the hard work that makes this such a special event,” Ten sports boss David White said.

AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane said Bathurst ranked alongside the AFL Grand Final and the Melbourne Cup as “must see” Australian sports events.
