White wins test shootout to snare Briggs seat

20/7/2002 15:08 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Konica Series front-runner Matthew White has joined Briggs Motorsport for this year’s endurance events.

White will partner veteran Tony Longhurst in one of the team’s twin Betta Electrical Falcons.

21-year-old Dean Canto, who signed with the Brisbane-based team earlier this year, will share driving duties with Brazilian speed demon Max Wilson.

Team principal John Briggs put a number of drivers through their paces at a test session at Queensland Raceway last Wednesday, including Dale Brede, Steve Owen, Paul Stokell and Paul Romano.

It is understood Brede has been asked to abandon his Gulf Western-funded endurance campaign to join Simon Wills in the CAT Falcon, though no official announcement has been made.

Melbourne-based White, a former AUSCAR champion and Konica Series runner-up in 2000, said he was looking forward to the opportunity.

“Although my test laps were relatively brief, the car felt very strong and I couldn’t be teamed up with a more experienced driver than Tony Longhurst,” the 28-year-old said.

“I think we will make a great team and I can’t wait for the races to roll around.”

White drove with David Besnard at Stone Brothers Racing in last year’s Queensland 500 and Bathurst 1000.
