Darwin leg safe until 2007

The V8 Supercars are welcome in Darwin until at least 2007, Northern Territory Chief Minister Clare Martin said.
The change in government last year won’t stop the annual Hidden Valley leg of the V8 series, with Martin today confirming the Labor government would honour the existing contract with AVESCO, which expires in 2007.
A similar show of support was staged in Adelaide earlier this year for the Clipsal 500, just weeks after Labor took office there. It seems V8 racing is one of few issues in Australian politics with bi-partisan support.
Ms Martin said the event provided a social and economic boost to the Northern Territory.
"The Supercars are beamed into thousands of homes nationally and internationally, making it a truly a valuable asset," she said.
"This year’s race attracted record crowds [more than 36,000 over the three days] and was extremely well run – it is quickly becoming the jewel in the Territory sporting calender."
