R4 RACE 1 – Bright claims first win of the season
18/5/2002 22:21 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Jason Bright has successfully negotiated tonight’s 20-minute racing entrée to maintain top spot for tomorrow’s main course.
It is only the second time this season Bright’s teammate Mark Skaife has been defeated.
Bright beat Skaife to the first corner and from there was never headed. He took the chequered flag by 1.5sec, as the sun set on a perfect day for the 29-year-old Victorian.
"We've had a tough couple of race meetings, so it's good to be back here," Bright said.
"Mark's got a fantastic lead in the championship, so we've just got to go out there and get as many wins as possible."
Marcos Ambrose was third, keeping Skaife honest throughout the race.
His search for a way past the red barons will continue tomorrow, though he said if he can get the jump he’ll have, “no problem winning the race.”
"We're knocking on HRT's door, and we are not very far away," he said.
Kmart Racing’s Todd Kelly found a way past Craig Lowndes, to finish just behind teammate Greg Murphy in fifth.
Russell Ingall was a non-finisher with engine problems, while Neil Crompton retired with power steering failure.
And Stone Brothers Racing’s Wayne Gardner was in the wars, clashing with Paul Morris and Anthony Tratt in separate incidents throughout the race.
