Romano to appeal unprecedented penalty
30/4/2002 17:20 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Paul Romano will appeal his extraordinary penalty for grave misconduct at Phillip Island Raceway earlier this month.
Romano received an unprecedented $20,000 fine and 150-point deduction for what appeared to be a reckless charge on Rodney Forbes during the second race at Phillip Island.
The pair clashed at turn two, resulting in both spinning off the track. Romano then drove into Forbes’ Falcon as he tried to rejoin the circuit.
For his part, Forbes was “severely reprimanded” for the ugly incident.
Romano Racing has filed a Notice of Intention to Appeal, with the matter to be heard this Thursday.
From matters arising at Eastern Creek last weekend:
Craig Lowndes was the only man fined over the weekend, a $300 penalty for exceeding the pitlane speed limit on Saturday.
Jason Richards and Jason Bright were both hit with a retrospective 32-second time penalty, Richards in race two and Bright in race three, for unnamed driving infringements.
The spate of stray wheels at Eastern Creek saw Russell Ingall’s Perkins Motorsport team and Paul Weel’s K & J Thermal Products outfit both reprimanded. Weel lived up to his name: he lost a wheel twice on Sunday.
John Faulkner was also reprimanded for refuelling in his pit garage.
