Morris upgrade delayed again
10/4/2002 11:23 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Paul Morris has delayed the debut of his new VX Commodore indefinitely, as the Queenslander continues his search for elusive front-end grip.
Morris planned to baptise the team’s first in-house built racer this weekend at Phillip Island Raceway after abandoning plans to debut the car in Adelaide.
Instead, development of the new car has been put on the backburner while Morris finds a better race set-up on his existing mount.
"We ran both cars at the test and the lap times were similar," Morris said after a 121-lap session at Queensland Raceway last Friday.
"However, the new car has a different power steering system and we need to do more testing to get it to where we want it to be before we race it.
"This season we haven't been able to hold mid-corner speed and we've had to slow the car down which has hurt us. We made some changes to the car set-up and things seem much better, so hopefully the gains we've made will work just as well down at Phillip Island as they did in testing.”
Morris faces the daunting task of pre-qualifying at Phillip Island, but is confident of securing his position on the 32-car grid.
"Pre-qualifying is risky because if you miss out you're going to be going home early," he said.
"It's no use complaining about pre-qualifying because we didn't have a good weekend in Adelaide and everyone knows the rules when they sign up for the championship."
