World-first timing system introduced

15/3/2002 11:53 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - A world-first timing system has been introduced to V8 Supercar racing this weekend in Adelaide, with fans able to view live on-line timing for the first time.

Developed specifically for V8 Supercars, governing body AVESCO claim the new system mirrors the best timing practices in world motorsport, including Formula One.

Gaming giant Playstation has signed a three-year contract with the sport as official timing sponsor.

Fans can access the real-time results via the official V8 Supercar web site. While the service is free this weekend, a $19.95 subscription fee will apply for the rest of the season.

"AVESCO's investment in this new technology has ensured a higher level of reliable information for our broadcaster, officials, teams and media, and now with live timing our fans as well," AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane said.
