Motorsport’s perennial Mr. Unlucky, rocked by two major sponsor withdrawals in the past twelve months, is back on his feet this season with the support of new naming-rights sponsor, steel tube manufacturer Orrcon.
Now, the game has changed. Rather than be in cash-starved survival mode, Larkham and his capable Gold Coast-based garage is gearing-up for an all-out assault on the championship series.
"One of the great things about Orrcon's support is that we now have the opportunity to spend on development instead of survival – I think it is fair to say that this year we will operate under the motto ‘we're back in the game’,” Larkham said at the team's season launch on Friday night.
"2001 certainly provided some unexpected challenges but we are now focused on 2002 and are on the way up. What we do have at LMS are some very dedicated and tenacious people and I think you will see the results of that tenacity throughout the season.”
Larkham unveiled his stylish new-look Orrcon Falcon at the launch, a brilliant blue and silver livery design compete with legendary GT racing stripes.
Orrcon was warmly welcomed to the sport on Friday by, among others, AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane.
Orrcon Managing Director, Silvio Pradella, said the integrity and professionalism of Larkham Motorsport had been “exemplary.”
“We are two businesses that have both undergone an amazing journey to get where we are today, and really we are now at the same point,” he said. “We've done the hard yards, we're prepared and we're ready to make our mark on the Australian scene."
Long-time backers Ford and Karcher reaffirmed their support for 2002, while DecoRug will continue their association with the team that began last season.
Larkham is testing the car at a crowded Queensland Raceway today, in preparation for next week’s Australian Grand Prix support meet in Melbourne.
“This is certainly an exciting time for our team,” Larkham said.
