V8 International boosted by sponsor support

21/1/2002 18:02 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - New Zealand’s wildly successful V8 International has re-signed its naming-rights sponsor, communications company Boost Mobile, for 2002.

It comes at a time when economic uncertainly has made sports sponsorship hard to come by. Three of the V8 Supercar circuit’s showcase events – the Canberra 400, Bathurst V8 Supercar 1000 and V8 Ultimate Sandown – and the championship series are all without major sponsors for the new season.

IMG Managing Director, Martin Jolly, said Boost Mobile’s continued support highlights the marketability of the V8 Supercar series outside Australia.

"Boost was quick to realise the value of an association with V8 Supercar racing, and the opportunities it presented to market its products to race fans," he said.

"In time, we believe this race will realise its potential as a true New Zealand international icon event.”

General Manager of Boost New Zealand, Toby Blizard, said the deal was part of the company’s commitment to the New Zealand community.

The 2002 V8 International, the penultimate round of the V8 Supercar championship from November 8-10, is still without a home, with IMG locked in negotiations. An Auckland street circuit event is reportedly the preferred option, ahead of a return to Pukekohe Park Raceway.

Last year's race attracted more than 86,000 fans to the upgraded venue, and saw local hero Greg Murphy dominate the event.
