Dumbrell back with a vengeance in 2002
12/1/2002 15:40 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Paul Dumbrell will be back to avenge his Konica V8 Supercar Series loss to Simon Wills last year, signing with Independent Race Cars Australia (IRC) to contest the 2002 series.
The 19-year-old Victorian will campaign an ex-Perkins Motorsport (Russell Ingall’s) VX Commodore in the five-round V8 Supercar feeder series, and selected rounds of the main championship.
Former Gibson Motorsport Team Manager, Marty Brant will head Dumbrell’s track-side team.
“I just can't wait to get back out there behind the wheel,” said Dumbrell, who drove a Gibson Motorsport-prepared Commodore in last year’s Konica league.
“Marty runs a very slick operation and the car should be the right one. Our aim is to win the title this year, now we have to prove we can do it.”
Dumbrell led the 2001 Konica Series championship going into the final round at Mallala Raceway, but was knocked out of contention in the opening race of the day in a clash with eventual winner, Wills.
"Paul did a fantastic job last year in his first full year of V8s,” Brant said, “and I truly believe he can take the title this year.
“Paul's fit, very focussed and he showed everyone last year that he can win races."
Dumbrell has secured the support of a “major national company” for his 2002 program, to be announced in the next few weeks.
