Record Adelaide crowds to herald start of season
9/1/2002 16:55 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Unprecedented demand for tickets to Adelaide’s Clipsal 500 carnival has forced organisers to add extra grandstand seating for the season-opening March event.
A new stand will be built in the Victoria Park race precinct at the entry to pitlane to cater for the increased demand. Stands at the Senna Chicane, Mistral Hairpin and along pit straight will also be expanded, increasing seating capacity from 17,500 to 20,000.
With ticket sales up $600,000 on this time last year, South Australian Tourism Minister Martin Hamilton-Smith was today confident of another record attendance.
“The Clipsal 500 Adelaide has been named Australia’s best national motorsport event three times in its three-year history, and now it is the first event on the motorsport calendar,” he said.
“With the abundance of cheap interstate airfares available in recent weeks, the time is right for this event to build on its success.”
A record crowd of more than 166,000 attended last year’s race.
