Musical chairs in TV box; White to lead coverage

19/12/2001 23:51 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - They’re playing musical chairs in the V8 Supercar commentary box, with a commentator shuffle set to change the sound of next year’s television coverage for the better.

Ten Network sports anchor Matthew White will lead the team next year, calling the shots alongside regular Supercar commentator, Mark Oastler.

White, an experienced sports presenter who has called everything from basketball to ironman racing, was groomed for the role at the Winton round earlier this year.

His commentary was refreshingly enthusiastic and lucid, and with a less crowded commentary box next year viewers can expect more reasoned coverage.

However, Neil Crompton’s astute insight will be conspicuously absent next year, as the Gibson Motorsport-contracted driver returns to the racing circuit.

Obnoxious motor-mouth Barry Sheene has been demoted to pitlane, where he’ll call the pit stop action with Greg Rust.

Ten Motorsport anchor Bill Woods will continue to host the showcase events, while fresh-faced Grant Denyer has seemingly been dumped from the V8 Supercar broadcast team.

Ten will begin covering AFL football on Saturdays next year, though the network has promised their motorsport slate will be unaffected by the lucrative football rights deal.
