Gardner: SBR car 'better than Seton's'

14/12/2001 12:19 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Buoyed by a productively fast initial test session with Stone Brothers Racing, Wayne Gardner is confident he can again make an impression on V8 Supercar racing in 2002.

Seeing double... Wayne Gardner tests alongside David Besnard at Queensland Raceway

"I wasn't disappointed," the former World Motorcycle champion said after the completion of the session at Queensland Raceway earlier this week.

"The SBR V8 was definitely as good as Seton's (Glenn Seton's Ford Tickford Racing Falcon), which I have driven a lot before, but the Caltex car will only improve with further testing.”

Gardner will make three cameo appearances for the Stone brothers next year, complimenting his racing program in Japan, before sharing the Caltex Falcon with David Besnard in the endurance events, the Queensland 500 and V8 Supercar 1000 at Bathurst.

Gardner was particularly impressed with the responsiveness of the Stone brothers machine, and is confident further gains can be made before his debut for the team, most likely at the season-opening Clipsal 500 in Adelaide.

"When you make changes to the set-up of some cars you don't get any response, but every change to the Caltex car during the test was met with an immediate response," Gardner said.

"I'm feeling very positive going into next year and hungry for results."

Team Manager Ross Stone was equally enthusiastic.

"Today was only our first test, but we saw enough to get pretty excited about next year,” he said.
