Johnsons V Brocks at Grand Prix opener

23/11/2001 18:50 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - One of Australian motorsport’s greatest rivalries will be re-ignited at next year’s Australian Formula One Grand Prix in Melbourne, with touring car immortals Dick Johnson and Peter Brock resuming hostilities – and taking their sons along for the ride.

The legends will team with their rev-heads sons, Steven Johnson and James Brock, for a crowd-pleasing father/son relay duel around the Albert Park circuit.

The Johnsons will race in the Ford Sierra Dick drove to victory in the 1989 Touring Car Championship and Bathurst 1000, while the Brocks will dust off Peter’s vintage 1987 Holden Commodore for the event.

The family feud is just one of the attractions at next year’s Grand Prix, which was officially launched in Melbourne this afternoon.

The V8 Supercars will again play a supporting role, opening the 2002 season with three non-championship races at Albert Park, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Internet service provider Netspace is the new naming-rights sponsor of the V8 Supercar Challenge.

The Grand Prix Corporation has proposed changes to the circuit, including new safety fencing, after the death of spectator marshal Graham Beveridge during this year’s Formula One race.

There is still some doubt over the event, with it subject to a coronial inquiry into the fatal accident.

The 2002 Fosters Australian Grand Prix is on March 1-3.
