Wills confident but wary of NZ homecoming

31/10/2001 16:22 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Kiwi Simon Wills says his intimate understanding of the Pukekohe Park circuit won’t be an advantage at next week’s V8 International, as the new CAT racer prepares for his solo debut in the Shell Championship Series.

Wills was today confirmed as John Bowe’s replacement in the John Briggs-prepared CAT Racing Falcon for the New Zealand event, after Bowe mysteriously was cut from the team recently.

The 26-year-old is eagerly looking forward to his New Zealand homecoming, but says the hundreds of laps he’s completed at Pukekohe will count for little next week.

“I know the Pukekohe track really well, but when you are competing in such a competitive class like this, that will not be a big advantage,” he said.

“This is a fantastic opportunity for me and I am looking to make the most of it.”

Wills said the 2.8km layout is conducive to close, spectacular racing.

“The track is very fast and was also quite bumpy in the past,” he said, “but I believe there has been a lot of improvements made to the circuit in preparation for this weekend.”

Wills will pilot a John Briggs Ford full-time next season. It is not known if he’ll also compete at the season Grand Final at Sandown Raceway next month.
