INDY RACE 1 & 2 - Tander, Skaife share Indy honours

27/10/2001 17:53 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Garth Tander and Mark Skaife shared the Indy spoils on the Gold Coast streets today, on a day dominated by Holden.

Pole-sitter Tander won the opening 30-minute CabCharge V8 Supercar Challenge race unopposed – his first V8 Supercar win since Bathurst last year – before Skaife turned the tables on his Commodore combatant to win the second.

Russell Ingall, who qualified outside the top ten, “cruised around” to finish fourth and third respectively.

Glenn Seton played a lone hand for Ford, claiming third in the opening race, but was forced out of the second event with mechanical problems.

With the V8 Supercar circus bound for New Zealand on Tuesday and no championship points on the line, today’s showcase events were a listless affair.

Though in race one, Steven Johnson’s spin at turn three left Brad Jones nowhere to go but into the Shell Helix Ford. Johnson drove on to figure in the top ten, but Jones was left with a damaged OzEmail Falcon.

Craig Lowndes got out of shape a lap later, slapping the concrete wall and retiring from the race and the day.

And the Stone brothers were less than impressed when Marcos Ambrose tagged teammate David Besnard in the first race (for which he received a stop/go penalty).

Standout performers included John Faulkner, who recorded a sixth and fifth in his Commodore, and Tony Longhurst, who was a top ten player in both races.

Greg Murphy stormed through the field from the last row of the grid to finish inside the top ten in the first race, but mechanical gremlins saw him start from pitlane in the afternoon bout.

Paul Radisich dropped a cylinder and ground to a halt after just two laps in race one, ending his hopes of a third Indy trophy.

The final race is scheduled for 11:55am tomorrow morning, raising the curtain on the Honda Indy 300 where Brazilian Roberto Moreno will start his Toyota/Reynard from pole.
