The Melbourne Cup runeth over by Bathurst?
11/10/2001 22:22 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Bathurst is fast becoming the ‘other’ race that stops a nation, with more than two million Australians tuning-in to the Mount Panorama epic last weekend.
The Ten Network’s coverage of the V8 Supercar 1000 held captive more than 60 percent of television viewers across the day – a 20 percent increase on last year’s record figures.
Sydney and Brisbane recorded peek ratings of 27, according to ratings provider OzTam, with Melbourne recording a 25.
The race also went live to New Zealand via TVNZ, where viewership almost doubled compared to last year.
TVNZ said it was one of the highest-rated sporting telecasts ever in New Zealand.
AVESCO Chairman Tony Cochrane said the result “enhanced yet again the exceptional growth and popularity of V8 Supercars.”
“Any sport would be over the moon to have such an enormous result,” he said.
