V81000 RACE - Skaife, Longhurst win Bathurst
7/10/2001 18:54 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
The Holden Racing Team’s Mark Skaife and Tony Longhurst have won the V8 Supercar 1000 at Bathurst.
It was a masterful display from the factory outfit, who survived the variable conditions and traditional carnage to take the chequered flag.
It is Skaife’s first Bathurst win in the V8 era, after winning back-to-back in 1991 and ’92. 46-year-old Longhurst won the event with Tomas Mezera some 13 years ago.
The Holden Racing Team had not won at Bathurst since 1996.
The OzEmail Falcon of Brad Jones and John Cleland upset to finish second, ahead of the K-Mart entry of Greg Murphy and Todd Kelly.
Skaife now leads the Shell Championship Series by 455 points with just two rounds remaining.
A full report to follow later tonight.
