V81000 KV8C - Wakefield wins Konica challenge
6/10/2001 13:55 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Wayne Wakefield has won a V8 Supercar race at Bathurst – albeit on a Saturday.
The 30-year-old Queenslander won this morning’s 30-lap Konica V8 Supercar Challenge support event, beating home Stone Brothers Racing stable-mate Matthew White in a closely-fought, two-horse race.
The audacious pole-sitter, aboard a self-prepared, aging VS Commodore, muscled past White on lap 12.
White remained a presence in Wakefield’s mirrors for the remainder of the race, finishing just four seconds behind.
Wakefield will partner Marcos Ambrose in the Pirtek Falcon in tomorrow's 1000km marathon, while White will team with David Besnard in the Caltex Havoline-liveried sister car.
Kevin Mundy finished third, ahead of Michael Simpson, who recovered from a stop/go penalty for jumping the start.
