Surface is fast, but cheats will prosper: Skaife

4/10/2001 21:35 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Mark Skaife has slammed the Bathurst City Council’s $1.3 million Mt. Panorama track resurfacing investment, saying the job was only half done.

While times tumbled in opening practice, today’s fastest man, Skaife, said the resurfacing has encouraged curb-hopping.

Also, Skaife said corner-cutting cars would drag dirt and grass onto the racing line, making an already slippery surface hazardous.

"The surface is fantastic, but you don't have to be a Philadelphia lawyer to figure out that if you raise the height of the road, you lessen the height of the kerbs," Skaife said.

The Holden Racing Team ace said one of the greatest concerns was the entry to the Chase, where drivers approach at speeds close to 300km/hr.

"I don't know what the solution is," he said. "One option is to put some tyre barriers in those places to stop guys doing it, but if you do that and someone has to take evasive action at some point on Sunday, they can hit those tyres and ruin their car.

“I think the only way is to have race observers watching it all day and consistently punishing drivers for kerb hopping."

Officials will address the matter before Sunday’s race.
