Calder dumped, as AVESCO goes back to court
6/9/2001 15:16 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Melbourne's Calder Park Raceway has been dumped from the 2002 V8 Supercar calendar due to outstanding sanctioning fees.
AVESCO announced this afternoon it had terminated its agreement with Calder Park Motorsport Promotions (CPMSP) and commenced legal proceedings to recover the fees owed for the circuit's V8 Supercar meeting in July.
That event, the 25th time the circuit has held a round of the national Touring Car championship, now appears to be the last for the ailing complex, with AVESCO CEO Wayne Cattach declaring AVESCO is "not prepared to consider future events at Calder Park at this stage" due to the belated payment.
"Our agreement with Calder Park had been in place for several years," Cattach said. "Calder Park has breached its payment obligations and, accordingly, we have terminated the agreement and commenced proceedings to recover the money owed to us."
Calder's Bob Jane told Australian Auto Action today that the decision was an excuse by AVESCO to move Shell Series events away from traditional venues.
Jane also alleged AVESCO's bill had been delivered to a Post Office Box that has not been in use for a number of years.
Cattach denied AVESCO had a hidden agenda, saying; "AVESCO has commenced proceedings for the sole purpose of recovering the 2001 Rights Fee and other entitlements under the Calder Park Agreement."
AVESCO's claim has been filed with the District Court of New South Wales, and is expected to be heard on October 12.
