Ellery to debut lighter, stronger Falcon

4/9/2001 22:04 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Steven Ellery will unveil a brand-new Super Cheap Auto AU Falcon, dubbed “the stealth machine” by the team, at Winton Raceway this weekend.

Ellery says the car, engineered by the modest Queensland-based operation over the past seven months, will be lighter and stronger than the previous model.

Up to 60kg of weight has been shed and an infamous “Larry bar” installed to produce a car with greater balance and stability, says Ellery.

“We had the debut of this car on the books for a while,” he explained. “The body shell has been in the workshop since January, but being a smaller team, we've had to build it up when we’ve had spare time.

"We haven't tried it yet but I'm sure the car will be stronger and faster than our current AU. For starters the new car is lighter, which will put us pretty close to the weight limit and throwing out the equivalent of an extra person will hopefully also make us quicker."

Ellery will shakedown the new machinery at Victoria’s Winton Raceway, round ten of the Shell Series, this weekend in preparation for next month’s main event: the V8 Supercar 1000 at Bathurst.

And after a top six finish in the recent Queensland 500, the Super Cheap operation has been buoyed ahead of their Mt. Panorama assault.

"I'm excited about getting into this car,” Ellery said. “At Queensland, the lap times and performance of our current AU were spot on and if this new car delivers what we think it will, then we'll have a pretty unbeatable combination at Bathurst.”
