Johnson immortalised at QLD Raceway

16/8/2001 13:08 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Queensland hero Dick Johnson has been immortalised at his home track, Queensland Raceway, with the unveiling of Dick Johnson Straight.

Johnson, a five-time national champion and three-time Bathurst victor, accepted the honour at a special ceremony at the circuit, host of next week’s VIP Petfoods Queensland 500, earlier today.

The pit wall now bares Johnson’s illustrious name, as does a commemorative plague to be placed track-side.

“It’s always a little humbling to be recognised in such a way,” Johnson said.

“I might not be around in 50 years, but it would be nice to think this track will still be here and that the sign-writing is maintained on this wall.”

Queensland Raceway Chairman, John Tetley, said the decision to rename the straight in Johnson’s honour was an obvious one, given his long list of achievements and long-standing commitment to the outer-Ipswich venue.

“If you were going to name a part of this track after anyone, the first person that comes to mind is Dick Johnson,” he said.

“Dick was instrumental in getting the Queensland Raceway off the ground and he has been more than generous with his time and words.”

A number of Queensland-based teams are testing at the circuit today in preparation for the 500km event, including Johnson’s Shell Helix team.
