Racing legend honoured amid sex scandal
1/7/2001 15:21 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Touring Car legend Ian “Pete” Geoghegan was inducted into the Australian Motorsport Hall of Fame last year while under investigation for sexually assaulting a teenage boy.
He later pleaded guilty to sex-related charges involving the 14-year-old and served six-months of a two-year jail sentence.
The revelation came to light in Brisbane’s Sunday Mail newspaper today, as the five-time Australian Touring Car Champion spoke of his shame over the incident.
Geoghegan, who won the first ever Bathurst 1000 with Allan Moffat back in 1973, said life had been difficult since his release last September.
“I’ve lost everything. My money and my friends,” he told The Sunday Mail. “I’m not working, I’m trying to get a job – and I’m looking for anything.”
The 62-year-old father of four told the paper that the offences occurred when he was 23, some 28 year’s ago.
Former racing rival Bob Jane said of Geoghegan; “He was a good friend, but now we don’t talk. I find it very sad.”
