Super Touring racer tests positive to drugs

29/5/2001 14:47 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - V8 Supercar drivers beware. Super Touring racer Peter Hills has been barred from racing for five months after testing positive to cannabis.

Hills had his racing licence disqualified after a CAMS tribunal this week upheld the positive test, taken at Wakefield Park Raceway in January.

CAMS, in conjunction with the Australian Drug Agency (ASDA), randomly test drivers for drugs and alcohol throughout the year.

V8 Supercar drivers were first drug tested at last year’s Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. No driver in the category has yet tested positive.

"There is no room for drugs in any sport, especially motorsport, where not only is a competitor in charge of his own actions, he must have complete control of his car," CAMS CEO Peter Hansen said. "We all know that cars can be dangerous when a driver does not have complete control."

"CAMS will continue to be tough on competitors who abuse not only the regulations of motorsport, but the laws of the land. We cannot tolerate drug abuse.”
