Ellery too fit for his own good
26/5/2001 12:30 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Steven Ellery says his supreme fitness has “backfired” on him, as the Queenslander rests-up for the GMC 400 in a fortnight.
"The guys (in the team) said to me that I was probably looking after myself a bit too well and I should eat more steak and chips. Perhaps I should give that a try," Ellery joked.
The Queenslander is recovering from a bout of the flu, possibly onset, he says, by being too fit. It is common for athletes to succumb to colds and flu because their immune system is weakened by the demands of training.
He spent a period of time on a drip in the hours after a taxing Hidden Valley event, and later spent time in a Brisbane hospital when his condition went downhill.
After overcoming a debilitating bout of glandular fever earlier in the year, it was a vicious setback.
“You spend all your effort getting into shape, watching what you eat and not pushing too hard before a round, to get sick once you get there is the worst thing in the world,” Ellery said.
"When you're not 100 percent it's impossible to do the job to the best of your ability. My personal disappointment was not delivering a result for the guys, who worked their arms off to get us there."
Canberra’s chilly reception will be a welcome change for Ellery, who’ll ease back into training in the next week.
