Masterful Richards wins fifth Targa

25/4/2001 15:10 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Ford-Tickford Racing’s Jim Richards claimed his fifth Targa Tasmania crown yesterday.

53-year-old Richards, with navigator Barry Oliver, drove masterfully during yesterday’s rain-marred final day to finish more than two seconds clear of Tony Quinn and Keith Wenn on total penalty time.

The evergreen Porsche pair were never headed during the eight-day, 2110km event.

"It's a thrill to win Targa again because it's one of the best events we do,” Richards, father of V8 Supercar star Steven, said.

“This year my car was fabulous. We had to change three tyres, and Tony (Quinn) did a great job staying on our tail. We thought he'd be quick and he was. Next year I will be back again."

Differential problems early in the week kept Peter Brock and son James well down in the results, finishing 75th.
