Richards wins GMC 400 - again!

21/4/2001 11:31 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Almost 12 months and a manufacturer change later, Ford-Tickford Racing’s Steven Richards has finally been crowned as the 2000 GMC 400 winner.

Just seven weeks before this year’s event, Richards was presented with his trophy at a ceremony at Braddon, Canberra today.

Richards, an official ambassador for the 2001 GMC 400, was unable to attend last year’s post-race function through exhaustion.

“Last year’s event was not only a highlight to me personally but the way it was run is a credit to everyone concerned," Richards, who won the event in a K-Mart Commodore, said.

Meanwhile, fellow event patron Mark Skaife was talking-up the June long weekend event at its New Zealand launch in Auckland yesterday.

“New Zealand motorsport fans were one of the biggest TV audience groups for last years GMC 400, which shows both the popularity of the V8 Supercars and the appeal of the Canberra street circuit,” Skaife said.

“Where else can you race our V8 Supercars between old and new Parliament Houses, in the heart of the country’s National Capital.”

Race organisers hope improvements made to the racing precinct, on both sides of the fence, will entice another bumper crowd to the National Capital.

“GMC 400 organisers have made important track changes that will create a wider, smoother circuit with more opportunity for passing, better vision for drivers and more exciting racing,” Skaife said.
