Adelaide to party until 2008
9/4/2001 10:22 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) -
Adelaide will party on for at least another seven years after securing a long-term contract with V8 governing body AVESCO yesterday.
In an unprecedented deal, the South Australian Government had its agreement extended until 2008 – a further five years added to the existing contract.
"We love playing host to such an outstanding event," South Australian Premier, John Olsen, told Adelaide’s Advertiser newspaper yesterday.
Mr Olsen said the enormous success of the event is money in the bank for the state, at a cost to taxpayers of just $400,000 each year. Last year’s failed Le Mans race cost a hefty $8 million to stage.
64,000 people passed through the gates to witness Jason Bright’s win yesterday, a record total of 168,500 over the three days.
The Clipsal 500 has won the coveted Race Meeting of the Year trophy for the past two years.
