Skaife, Tander win prestigious motorsport gongs

28/2/2001 22:59 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - The two standout performers from last year’s Shell Series, Mark Skaife and Garth Tander, were among the winners at the Australian MotorSport Awards in Melbourne this evening.

Bathurst victor Garth Tander received the Circuit Racer of the Year award, while Shell Series champion Mark Skaife was honoured in the pubic-voted Personality of the Year category. Perkins Engineering enduro pilot Luke Youlden was named the Young Achiever of the Year.

The awards, held in conjunction with motorsport governing body CAMS and the fortnightly racing publication Motorsport News, are a traditional part of Grand Prix week festivities in Melbourne.

In a gala ceremony dominated by motorsport’s youth, Formula 1 hopefuls James Courtney and Mark Webber were among the night’s biggest winners. Courtney was crowned the MotorSportsman of the Year, a title Craig Lowndes received in 2000.
