31 V8 Supercars will make their 2001 debut at Albert Park next month in support of the Australian Grand Prix.
Melbourne’s Formula 1 Grand Prix carnival gives fans their first look at the new teams, the new paintwork and the new drivers that will battle for title honours in this year’s Shell Championship Series.
Pirtek Racing’s Marcos Ambrose will make his Supercar debut at Albert Park, while many others will return to the V8 circuit in new cars and colours.
Much of the attention will centre on Craig Lowndes, who will be seen behind the wheel of a Falcon for the first time. Lowndes will carry the number 00 in the event, and throughout the year.
Lowndes’ replacement at HRT, Indy adventurer Jason Bright, makes a welcome return to the series. Steven Richards, who defected to Ford-Tickford Racing recently, will also race under his new flag for the first time.
Former Young Lion Todd Kelly will christen the new TWR/K-Mart Racing Team at the event. His teammate Greg Murphy will watch from pitlane (he will compete in the Lamborghini support event, however), waiting until Phillip Island to return to racing.
Four wildcards (those that have not automatically qualified for the event) have been chosen by both AVESCO and Australian Grand Prix organisers. They are; Toll Racing’s Anthony Tratt, Rod Nash Racing’s Cameron McConville, Jason Richards from the Team Kiwi outfit and Tomas Mezera.
The race around the lake will be held from March 1-4.
