Famed females to race at Clipsal Adelaide
17/1/2001 22:25 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - A field of famous females will partake in the traditional Holden verses Ford V8 rivalry in Adelaide this year, it was announced recently.
An all-female celebrity race, ala Melbourne’s Australian F1 Grand Prix, has been added to this year’s Clipsal 500 program in support of the V8 Supercars.
16 luminaries from various fields of endeavour will be strapped aboard Ford Lasers and Holden Astras – race-prepared and decked-out in the colours of major V8 Supercar teams – to do battle as a curtain raiser to the main event.
Each driver will be “adopted” by a V8 Supercar outfit and trained under the guise of the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS). Ford and Holden will combine to ensure performance parity between the two makes.
The celebrity race joins a PROCAR-convened line-up of Sportscar races and a “Ute muster” on the Adelaide support card.
Meanwhile, the Down Syndrome Society of South Australia has been chosen as the official charity of the third annual Clipsal 500.
The society will work in conjunction with Clipsal 500 organisers to raise funds and awareness for the debilitating genetic condition.
Said South Australian Tourism Minister Joan Hall, “Funds raised by the society are used to further research, and the charity’s involvement at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide will also increase public awareness in relation to Down Syndrome."
The 2001 award-winning Clipsal 500 will be held on the streets of downtown Adelaide from April 6-8.
