Seton in no hurry to announce co-pilot
14/12/2000 21:57 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Ford-Tickford Racing are in no hurry to confirm their driver line-ups for next season, insisting reports that suggest a replacement for Neil Crompton has been found are false.
As discussions continue with prospective drivers, Ford-Tickford’s General Manager Jon Matthews says a final decision is not expected soon.
"Yes we have spoken to many drivers in the search for a replacement for Neil Crompton, and yes we have narrowed the list down to just a few. But no, contrary to media reports we have not signed any driver apart from Glenn (Seton) for the 2001 season," Matthews said in a team statement late today.
Team Principal Glenn Seton has been quoted as saying while the team expect to make a decision before Christmas, no official announcement will be made until the New Year.
While a number of drivers have been linked with the team – 500cc Motorcycle Champion Wayne Gardner and former Factory Holden racer Cameron McConville among them – 33-year-old Queenslander Cameron McLean has firmed in favouritism over the past week to fill Crompton’s shoes.
Despite McLean showing strong interest in the mount, FTR maintain the former privateer champ is only one of many candidates under consideration.
Meanwhile, preparations have begun for next season from a mechanical perspective, with the team conducting tests on new components recently. Results of the tests were positive, according to the team statement.
