Ingall made to pay for Bathurst remarks

14/12/2000 16:02 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Russell Ingall’s name has once again been tarnished after he was last night found guilty at a CAMS Disciplinary Tribunal investigating comments he made at a Bathurst media conference.

Ingall was found guilty of National Competition Rule 183(iv), that is, “an act prejudicial to the interests of a competition, or to the interests of automobile competitions generally” for his scathing attack on backmarkers and the CAMS licensing system.

The Tribunal strongly condemned the actions of Ingall, unanimously finding that his comments were, as CAMS’ release stated, “denigrating to other competitors, CAMS and the CAMS licensing system and...conduct which was prejudicial to Motorsport in general.”

Ingall was slapped with a $4000 fine, and ordered to pay a further $2,130 to cover CAMS’ legal costs. The tribunal also noted that the finding of guilt for a “well-known sportsman” should be punishment enough.

The hearing was scheduled for last Wednesday night, but it was requested the case be heard last night to allow Ingall to seek legal counsel.

Ingall was exonerated from the initial charge of “bringing the sport into disrepute” immediately following Bathurst.

Both parties have until 5:00pm next Tuesday to lodge an appeal.
