7/12/2000 19:14 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - Marcos Ambrose will drive for the Stone Brothers Racing operation next season, the SBR Web Site today confirmed.

As reported here last month, Ambrose has signed with the Queensland-based operation to drive the Pirtek-backed Falcon next year. The deal ties Ambrose to the team for the next two years.

23-year-old Ambrose was setting the single-seater world alight in Europe, winning both the European Formula Ford Championship and the British equivalent. Ambrose is a virgin in Australia’s Supercar class.

Kiwi Craig Baird has parted-ways with the team. The former BTCC campaigner is chasing another V8 Supercar mount for next season, or a drive in the American Transam Series.

While not officially confirmed, David Besnard will pilot the team’s Caltex Havoline Falcon, replacing veteran Tony Longhurst.

However, as recently as Saturday night’s V8 Supercar Awards Gala, Longhurst was adamant he would not be forced into retirement. His position with SBR next year is unclear.

Ambrose was at Queensland Raceway today, testing in both Stone Brothers machines in preparation for next year’s March kick-off. The session was a productive one, according to an SBR spokesperson.
