Record V8 support grid on Coast
29/9/2000 4:00 (V8 Wire - Jason Whittaker) - A record 29 V8 Supercars will thunder around the streets of Surfers Paradise in support of this year’s Honda Indy 300 next month.
A full grid of V8 Supercars – nine more than last year – will compete on the Coast in the FAI Insurance V8 Supercar Challenge, a series of three sprint races over the weekend.
A Top 10 Qualifying Shootout will be used for the second time at Indy on Friday afternoon, ahead of the first of three races on Saturday morning. The final race will be held in the lead-up to the Honda Indy 300 on Sunday.
The Gold Coast support event will be the final hit-out for teams and drivers before November’s grand finale at Bathurst.
The Supercars share the support card with the Honda Young Gun Challenge, which will see twelve of the country’s best young drivers on display, gunning for the prize of an Indy Lights test session. V8 Supercar campaigners Steven Johnson and Paul Weel have been selected to compete.
Plenty of interest will also surround ex-V8 Supercar star Jason Bright, who will pilot a CART machine in the main event for the time in his blossoming career.
Australia’s biggest Motorsport-flavoured party – the Honda Indy 300 – will be held from October 12-15.
