Debut 'mission accomplished' for Greg Smith Motorsport

13/4/2005 21:48 (Press Release) - Newcastle based rookie Greg Smith arrived nervous and anxious in Adelaide, but proudly left fully excited from his first showing in the FUJITSU AIRSTAGE supported, ex DJR AU Falcon at the Clipsal 500, round one of the HPDC (Holden Performance Driving Centre) V8 Supercar Series.

“The entire team was pleased with our progression throughout the weekend and we managed to mostly stay out of drama and improved lap times with each outing,” said a very happy Smith. “At the beginning I was being particularly cautious, needing a street directory at some sectors, first time on this circuit, and first time with a V8 Supercar and especially since this difficult and unpredictable Adelaide circuit is well known for eating up race cars.”

“By the final race I was much more comfortable with the high speed blind corners with nowhere to go but concrete, achieving my fastest lap within 8% of Dean Canto’s record breaking lap. Easy, you just need a truck load of blind faith to go with it!” Smith joked.

It was all smiles on the trip home for the Newcastle racer Greg, wife Sharon and crew (from Sydney and Rockhampton) with the achievement of bringing their car home in one piece from their first V8 Supercar meeting and 12th place in points from the field of 22-cars.

The GSM team looked great and worked together very professionally. “Everything is coming along fantastically, from the impressive Chev 7 Litre V8 diesel tow vehicle, great livery on the car (we kept last season’s striking paint scheme), to the promotional posters. I couldn’t be happier with the decision to join the V8 Supercar ranks. We have made many new friends and supporters in Adelaide and even gained a new sponsor in the form of Ultra Tune, we are having an absolute ball.” explained Smith.

The next appearance for the GSM team will be at Goulburn’s Wakefield Park (NSW), May 13 – 15 for Round 2 of the HPDC V8 Supercar Series. The GSM Team will be looking for a step up in lap times with the R1 experience under the belt.
