HIGH SPEED INCIDENT ENDS BARGWANNA’S RUN IN OPENER

13/4/2005 18:04 (Press Release) - A 200kmph incident exiting the notorious turn eight on the Adelaide street circuit ended Larkham-Orrcon Racing’s Jason Bargwanna’s charge during the opening race of the 2005 V8 Supercar Championship in Adelaide today.

After qualifying in 23rd position Bargwanna elevated himself to as high as tenth during the opening half of the race.

While Bargwanna was on the charge his team-mate Mark Winterbottom was hampered by a fuel pressure problem that forced him to undertake a lengthy pit stop for a change of the fuel pressure regulator aboard his Orrcon Racing Falcon, in the process losing seven laps on the race leaders.

On Lap 51 Bargwanna ran wide on the high speed turn eight, hitting the concrete wall at 200kmph and causing severe damage to the number 10 Orrcon Racing Falcon.

“We had been struggling with the balance of the car after we made some changes during the pit stop. Entering turn eight on that lap the rear end stepped out forcing me to miss the apex, I ran wide onto the marbles and from there I was just along for the ride,” said Bargwanna.

”I was able to soften the blow a bit but there is still severe damage to the car and it will be a long night for the boys.”

The list of damage to the Orrcon Racing Falcon is extensive with an engine change required due to fact that the engine block has being damaged and breaking off a mounting lug along with replacement of the left hand side suspension, three shock absorbers, steering rack, fuel tank, diff cooler and all of the left hand side panels and cosmetics.

Despite his lengthy pit stop Winterbottom continued on in an endeavor to develop the set up for tomorrow’s second leg.

“After the problem with the fuel pressure we turned my focus to use the race to improve the set up for tomorrow’s race,” said Winterbottom.

“While it is disappointing to finish where we did, tomorrow is a long race and I am confident that if we can keep our nose clean and get a good result.”

Winterbottom will start tomorrow’s second 78-lap race at the Clipsal 500 from 24th position with Bargwanna from 29th.

In last year’s second race of the Clipsal 500 Bargwanna passed 16 cars to finish fifth while Winterbottom was running as high as eighth before a high speed accident ended his good run several laps from home.
