Team BOC Session Report

13/4/2005 17:56 (Press Release) - Session Report
Clipsal 500
Adelaide Street Circuit
Round 1 V8 Supercars Championship
Race 1- Saturday, 19 March 2005

A solid performance from the Team BOC duo in race one today at the Clipsal 500 but Bowe’s finishing position of 12th is still under debate after he was awarded a drive through penalty for having too many crew working on the car during the pit stop. Fierce arguing from Team Manager Kim Jones ensured the incident was reviewed at the end of the race with discussions still underway as this report went to press.

Brad Jones was looking at a top six placing but a damaged tyre caused a late race pit stop with the team taking the chance to bolt on four fresh tyres. Jones was still happy with his 13th position, after starting way back in 21st. In the early stages of the race, Jones and his crew conducted two lightning pit stops for tyres and fuel during a safety car period on lap 21, pushing the #21 Team BOC driver from 17th to sixth. His aggression was also evident from the onset when he jumped four positions on the opening lap after a great start off the line.

Both drivers will use the next 14 hours to recover and rehydrate, having to do it all again tomorrow for another 250 kilometres and two and half hours of gruelling racing.

“There’s really not much I can say at the moment. We’re still waiting for the race stewards to review the situation with my drive through penalty and I don’t want to comment until a verdict is handed down. From a race perspective, my Team BOC Falcon was ok but not as fast as I would have liked. On my first set of tyres, it was really hard to find a decent race pace but that improved when the second set [of tyres] went on. We made a mistake on my tyre pit stop that cost us ten or so seconds, so to know that 12th is the worst result we can get out of this isn’t too bad.”

“The guys did a great job with my first two pit stops which pushed me up inside the top ten. What was also pleasing was that my Team BOC Falcon was as quick, if not quicker than all the cars that I was racing against I was really impressed with the way things were going until my left hand front tyre started to collapse We made the decision not to gamble and bring the car in to replace all four tyres, there was no point ending up in a wall and no being able to race tomorrow. When I looked at the tyre after the race, it was certainly the right decision. If I can get a start like I did today and maintain the same sort of car balance, we could end up doing ok tomorrow.”
